UTD-Specific Things to Know
UTD's CS and ECS programs are heavy on terminal work — Python, Java, Linux VMs. The M1 chip runs these extremely well with no fan noise. Students in the EMAC program doing video editing or 3D work should lean toward 512GB storage to avoid running out of space mid-semester.
UTD's campus is in Richardson, TX — about 20 miles from Prosper. If you're in DFW before school starts, we can meet at a local spot in 30 minutes. If you're moving from out of state, we can ship to your Richardson address before you arrive.
M1 vs M2 at UTD — Is It Worth the Upgrade?
The M2 Air is about 15–18% faster and has a slightly larger 13.6" screen. For most UTD students, you won't feel that difference in day-to-day use. The exception is EMAC students doing heavy 4K video or 3D rendering — for them, M2 is worth the extra $150–$200.
For ECS, CS, and business students: save the money. The M1 runs Python, VS Code, and React builds fast. The bottleneck is almost never the chip.
Pricing in 2026 — What to Actually Pay
| Model | Fair Price (Used) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| M1 Air 8GB/256GB | $480–$550 | Sweet spot for most UTD programs |
| M1 Air 8GB/512GB | $530–$610 | Good for EMAC, Arts & Tech, CS students with larger project files |
| M2 Air 8GB/256GB | $650–$740 | Newer chip + slightly bigger screen — worth it for heavy media work |
| M1 Pro 14" (if budget allows) | $750–$870 | More ports, fan for sustained loads — good for intensive ECS work |
5 Things to Check Before You Buy
- Turn it on and boot it clean — no loops, no errors, no setup screen asking for someone else's Apple ID
- Activation Lock: Apple menu → About This Mac → System Report → Activation Lock: Off
- Battery cycles: System Settings → Battery → Battery Health → Cycle Count (under 500 is excellent)
- Keyboard: open TextEdit and type every key — especially the top row and spacebar
- Seller signs out of iCloud in front of you before payment — non-negotiable
Why Buy Local in DFW?
Most used MacBook listings on Facebook Marketplace or OfferUp lack battery health info, real photos, or any inspection. You're guessing. With Caldex, we show you the battery health screenshot, every cosmetic detail, and confirm iCloud is cleared before you even consider paying.
Local meetup means you see the MacBook running before you pay. Richardson is 20 miles from us — we meet, you inspect, you decide. No pressure.
