How to Wipe a MacBook Before Selling It
Takes about 45–60 minutes. You need to do three things in order: back up your data, sign out of iCloud, then erase. Skip any step and the buyer either can't use it or inherits your personal data. Here's the complete process.
The Steps — Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1 through M5)
Apple Silicon Macs (any MacBook with an M-series chip — M1 through M5) have a built-in "Erase All Content and Settings" feature. This is the easiest path.
Back Up Your Data
Connect an external drive, open System Settings → General → Time Machine, and run a backup. Alternatively, upload critical files to iCloud Drive or Google Drive. Do not skip this — erase is permanent and there is no undo.
Sign Out of iCloud
Go to System Settings → click your name at the top → scroll down to Sign Out. You'll be asked if you want to keep a copy of your iCloud data — you can choose No since you've already backed up. Enter your Apple ID password when prompted. This removes Activation Lock from the device so the buyer can use it.
Sign Out of iMessage
Open the Messages app → Settings (Cmd+,) → iMessage tab → Sign Out. This deregisters your phone number from iMessage on this device. If you skip this, the buyer may have trouble sending/receiving texts from iPhone users.
Erase All Content and Settings
Go to System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings. Click Continue, enter your password, and follow the prompts. The Mac will erase itself and reinstall a fresh copy of macOS automatically. This takes 20–40 minutes. When it's done, it will restart to the language selection screen — exactly what the buyer needs to see.
The Steps — Intel MacBooks
Intel Macs (2019 and earlier, and some 2020 models) don't have the built-in erase tool. You'll use Recovery Mode instead.
Back Up, Sign Out of iCloud and iMessage
Same as steps 1–3 above. Do these first before entering Recovery Mode.
Restart into Recovery Mode
Shut down the Mac completely. Press the power button, then immediately hold Cmd (⌘) + R until you see the Apple logo or a spinning globe. Release the keys. You'll boot into macOS Recovery — a special environment for reinstalling and erasing.
Erase the Drive in Disk Utility
In Recovery Mode, open Disk Utility. Select "Macintosh HD" in the left sidebar (or "Macintosh HD - Data" if you see it). Click Erase at the top. Format: APFS. Name: Macintosh HD. Click Erase. Once done, close Disk Utility.
Reinstall macOS
Back in the Recovery menu, click "Reinstall macOS." Follow the prompts — the Mac will download and install a fresh copy of macOS from Apple's servers. You'll need a Wi-Fi connection. This takes 30–60 minutes. When done, the Mac restarts to the setup screen.
