MacBook LifespanHonest Take

What 4 Years of College Actually Does to a MacBook

One of the most common questions we get: "Will this refurbished MacBook last all four years?" The honest answer is yes — with caveats. Here's what actually happens over 4 years of real college use.

The Battery

This is the biggest change you'll notice over time. MacBook batteries are rated for 1,000 charge cycles before they hit 80% of original capacity. For a college student charging daily, that's roughly 3–4 years of normal use.

Year 1–2
Battery feels like new. 10–14 hours on an M1 Air. No change from day one.
Year 3
Battery health drops to 75–85%. You're getting 8–11 hours instead. Still a full day without charging.
Year 4
Battery health may be 65–80% depending on charging habits. May need to top up during long study sessions.

If you start with a refurbished MacBook at 85% battery health — you're a cycle lower than new. By year 4, it may be at 60–75%. Still usable, but you'll notice it.

Battery replacement on an M1 Air costs $100–$150 at a third-party shop and restores it fully. Many students do this around year 3 and get another 3 years of great battery life out of the machine.

Tips to slow battery degradation

The Chassis and Screen

After 4 years of daily carrying, the MacBook will show wear. Here's what's typical:

What doesn't wear out: The M1/M2 chip, the SSD, the ports (if treated normally), Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. The internal hardware stays solid — it's cosmetics and battery that change.

The Software

After 4 years, macOS will have released several major updates. As of 2026, the M1 MacBook Air (2020) is rated for software support through at least macOS Sonoma and is expected to receive updates through 2028–2029. At graduation, the M1 Air will still receive security patches and new macOS versions — your MacBook won't be abandoned by Apple.

Intel MacBooks from 2018–2020 are in a different position. Software support will taper off sooner, possibly by 2027–2028. If longevity matters, M1 or later is the right call.

3 Real Student Scenarios at Graduation

Best Case

Kept in a sleeve, charged well, never dropped

At graduation: light lid scratches, 72% battery health, everything works perfectly. Resell value: $200–$280. Or: replace battery for $130 and keep using it in grad school or your first job.

Average Case

Daily bag carry, dropped once (no screen damage), casual charging

At graduation: moderate cosmetic wear, 65% battery health, slight keyboard fading. Still functions fine for everyday tasks. Resell value: $150–$220.

Hard Case

Dropped hard (screen cracked), port bent, battery at 58%

Screen repair: $200–$300 at Apple, $100–$150 at a third-party shop. Worth repairing if the machine works well otherwise — a $130 screen + $130 battery repair gives you a functioning MacBook for another 3 years at a fraction of a new one.

Does a Refurbished MacBook Last 4 Years?

Yes. The M1 chip hardware is designed to last 7–10 years. A 1–2 year old refurbished MacBook has 5–8 years of hardware life remaining. What gets replaced is the battery — every 4–5 years if you want all-day runtime. What wears cosmetically is the chassis. What stays solid is everything else.

A refurbished M1 Air bought at 85% battery health in 2026 will still be a capable, fast MacBook in 2030. It will likely need a battery replacement by then — but the machine itself will be fine.

The Verdict

A refurbished MacBook Air M1, bought in good condition with 80%+ battery health, will comfortably handle 4 years of college. The hardware won't slow down. The software stays supported. The only real maintenance is a possible battery replacement around year 3–4 ($100–$150) — still far cheaper than buying a new MacBook.

If you treat it reasonably (sleeve or case, no spills, don't sit on it), you'll graduate with a MacBook that's still worth $150–$250 and has years of usable life remaining.
