What Is MacBook Activation Lock?
Activation Lock is the single biggest risk when buying a used MacBook. A locked Mac is a brick — completely unusable, with no way around it. This guide explains what it is, how to check before you pay, and the one rule that keeps you safe every time.
What Activation Lock Actually Is
When you sign into iCloud on a Mac and turn on Find My, Apple ties that Mac to your Apple ID. If someone erases the Mac — or if it gets lost or stolen — Activation Lock kicks in. The Mac will demand the original owner's Apple ID and password to set up. Without those credentials, it's a $400 paperweight.
This is intentional. It's an anti-theft feature that makes stolen Macs worthless to thieves. The problem is it can also catch honest buyers off guard — either through negligence (seller forgot to sign out) or fraud (seller intentionally sells a locked device).
If a seller tells you Activation Lock "doesn't matter" or "can be bypassed": It does matter. It cannot be bypassed. Walk away immediately. There is no legitimate third-party service that removes Activation Lock — they are all scams.
How to Check Before You Buy
This check takes 60 seconds and protects you completely. Do it every time.
If a seller refuses to do any of these steps — especially signing out in front of you — don't buy the Mac. The reason they're refusing is the reason you shouldn't buy it.
What to Do If You Already Bought a Locked Mac
If you've already purchased a Mac and it's Activation Locked, your options are limited:
- Contact the seller first. Ask them to sign into iCloud.com and remove the device from their account remotely. A legitimate seller who made an honest mistake will do this immediately.
- Go to Apple. Apple can sometimes remove Activation Lock with proof of purchase — specifically, a receipt showing the original sale from an Apple Store or authorized retailer. They will not do it for private-party purchases without ironclad documentation.
- Accept that you may be out the money. If the seller disappears and you have no Apple receipt, there's no path forward. The Mac is locked forever.
Do not pay anyone to "unlock" an Activation Locked Mac. These services take your money and deliver nothing. The only people who can remove Activation Lock are the original Apple ID holder and, in limited cases, Apple directly.
If You're Selling a MacBook: How to Remove Activation Lock
Sign out of your Apple ID before handing over the Mac — or before erasing it. There are two ways:
Option 1: Sign out on the Mac itself
- Open System Settings → click your name at the top
- Scroll to the bottom and click "Sign Out"
- Choose not to keep copies of iCloud data on this Mac
- Confirm sign-out — Find My is now disabled
Option 2: Remove remotely via iCloud.com
- Go to iCloud.com and sign in with your Apple ID
- Open Find My → Devices
- Select the Mac → click "Remove from Account"
- Confirm — the Mac is now free of your Apple ID
After either method, erase the Mac using System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings. The buyer gets a clean Mac with no trace of your data and no Activation Lock.
Why Caldex Macs Are Always Activation Lock Free
Every Mac we sell is verified clean before it changes hands. We check the Apple ID status, sign out in front of the buyer (or before listing), and erase to factory settings. You never have to worry about this with a Caldex unit — and you always see it boot to setup before paying.
This is the most important thing to verify on any used Mac, from any seller. If they won't show you a working, unlocked Mac before you pay — walk away. No exceptions.
