College Move-In Day MacBook Checklist (2026)

Move-in day is chaotic. You don't want your MacBook to be part of the chaos. Do these things before you arrive on campus — or in the first 24 hours — and you'll start the semester ready.

Before You Leave Home

1. Set up your Apple ID. Sign in with your Apple ID (or create one — it's free). This links iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, and the App Store. Everything else depends on it.

2. Update macOS. System Settings → General → Software Update. Install everything. Some campus software requires a minimum macOS version. Don't discover this the night before orientation.

3. Download must-haves at home. Campus Wi-Fi on move-in day is often slow or overloaded. Download at home:

4. Turn on iCloud Drive. System Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Drive → Sync this Mac. If your MacBook is lost, stolen, or damaged, you don't lose your work.

5. Test your battery. Run the MacBook unplugged for 2 hours on real tasks. On a healthy M1 Air, you should use 6–10% per hour of mixed browsing/writing. More than that may signal a degraded battery.

6. Turn on Find My Mac. System Settings → [Your Name] → Find My → Find My Mac → On. 30 seconds now could save you a MacBook later.

7. Label your charger. College students lose chargers constantly. Put masking tape with your name on yours, or get a distinctive charger sleeve. MacBook USB-C chargers cost $30–$60 to replace.

8. Get a case or sleeve. A slip-on sleeve protects the lid. A hardshell case adds drop protection. A fall from desk height can crack a screen — plan accordingly before it happens.

9. Set up your dorm backup routine. Don't rely only on iCloud. Use at least one of:

A redundant backup takes 10 minutes and could save you from losing a semester of work.

First Week of Classes

10. Connect to campus Wi-Fi and VPN. Your school's IT page has instructions. The VPN is required to access library databases and internal resources from off-campus.

11. Set up school email in Mail app. Mail → Settings → Add Account. You'll actually see notifications when professors email you — instead of only checking when you remember to open a browser tab.

12. Install your school's print system. Most campuses use PaperCut or similar. Install it before your first assignment is due.

13. Learn the shortcuts you'll use constantly:

14. Set Screen Time limits (optional). System Settings → Screen Time → App Limits. Set a daily cap on apps that distract you most. The friction helps during study sessions.
